Expanding the demo to adults 18-49, the group MLB has been struggling to engage with, and the increase is 57%ĮSPN Sees Significant Increase In Youth Demo For MLB Broadcasts via Īnd get this, not only are there more younger eye balls on baseball games lately, there’s also reportedly been “staggering growth for women and Hispanic viewership” in the younger age ranges, as well. One of my favorite – and most effective – anecdotes to describe the current state of interest in MLB reads like a marketing short horror story: “The median age of a MLB fan goes up by one year, every year.” Baseball is infamously behind the NBA and NFL in this respect and it does present a serious challenge to the longevity of the sport.īut lately, there’s been some good signs:ĮSPN is seeing a 69% increase in the 18-34 adult demo. More Fans in the Right Age Group? For MLB? Really? Ultimately, with cases still rising across the country and MLB just BARELY over their TWO major outbreaks this season, I think taking things slowly for now is probably the right call. It also means more staff in the ballpark to serve those fans (which isn’t wholly a bad thing, of course … people need/want to work), and less space for the players to spread out. Fans in the stands doesn’t mean just more people sitting in the stadium. That, alone, presents a potential imbalance in revenue, competitiveness, and, of course, risk. Remember, even if MLB allowed fans in the stands, certain cities are still not allowing it. A league spokesperson says, “Given the state of the virus throughout the country and that most of our clubs do not have authorization from their local jurisdictions allowing for it, we are not able to consider hosting fans at this time.” However, the decision was to keep the status quo for now: The Rockies and Rangers, in particular, are reportedly pushing hard to make it happen. In Canada, Raw averaged 173,600 viewers and 84,900 in the 25-54 demographic on Sportsnet 360, which was its best viewership mark in the country since the Draft on October 4 th.Earlier today, Rob Manfred held his weekly call with owners when the topic of opening ballparks to fans down the stretch was brought up. The Monday Night Football game between New Orleans and Seattle averaged 11,189,000 viewers and 3.07 in 18-49 on ESPN, which was down 11 percent in viewers from last week’s game. Raw had less competition compared with last week without the MLB playoffs to contend with. The show was strengthened by a Fatal 4-Way Ladder Match that was announced in the opening segment for the closing half-hour of the program involving Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Rey Mysterio, and Finn Balor. From start to finish, viewership dropped by 8.5 percent and 18-49 fell by 4 percent.
